Ashley Champagne Text Analysis

Page history last edited by Ashley Champagne 10 years, 6 months ago

Poem Viewer is a fascinating resource for studying works that emphasize the importance of sound quality. Langston Hughes's work is one such example. When Hughes's poems are read aloud, their sonic quality, which is often based on the blues, is easily recognizable. However, Poem Viewer's emphasis on the different ways the mouth moves when reading his work provides an interesting look at the sonic qualities in his writing. Considering that literature is largely organized in anthologies according to canonical trends that often emphasize the written text over the oral, Poem Viewer might offer a way of displaying the importance of sound in works stemming from oral cultures and/or works based on music. As online anthologies become more widely used, I wonder how tools, such as Poem Viewer, might be used in conjunction with these online platforms to recognize the often undervalued quality of sound in art.
